Prior to the Affordable Care Act, Olivia would have been denied coverage for treatment of her PTSD. She most likely would have been denied an insurance plan altogether because of this pre-existing mental health condition. Now, health insurance companies not only have to sell her plans that cover her PTSD treatments, they also cannot charge her higher rates than they charge people without such a condition. Olivia now has a Marketplace plan and receives federal subsidies that lower her premiums to $240 per month. Without the ACA, she would have no options for health coverage. But, now, she has access to the care she needs. Olivia still has challenges to face, but the ACA has given her the chance to face those challenges with mental well-being on her side.
