Mary, Missouri

Mary’s retirement savings were consumed by unexpected medical expenses after having a catastrophic illness almost kill her. The year before she was eligible for Medicare, Mary’s company insurance ran out leaving her retired and uninsured. She knew she needed health insurance due to the couple health problems she had, but couldn’t find a good plan that was affordable. A plan with good coverage would have cost her an outrageous $36,000 a year so she settled with a plan that only covered 50% of medical expenses for $1,200 per month. Hoping to get by with this plan until she was able to go on Medicare, Mary was surprised by a blood clot. She was in and out of the hospital for a year and had three major surgeries in order to save her life. The timing couldn’t have been worse. The retirement savings that she worked so hard for during her successful career as an executive disappeared. Now, she has to watch every penny she spends all because of a lack of affordable health insurance. “This is not the way I hoped to spend my senior years,” Mary said. “Every person in this country should have medical insurance, not just the ones who can afford it.”
