Lyssa has health care coverage through the Marketplace. Last year, when Lyssa moved from Joplin to Columbia, she looked at Anthem’s provider directory to find an in-network doctor. Although the online directory listed multiple in-network physicians located Columbia, Lyssa found that those doctors were actually out-of-network for her plan. The closest in-network physicians she could find were located in either Kansas City and St. Louis. The doctor she eventually saw told her that Anthem made it difficult for its consumers who purchased their plan through the Marketplace to find in-network providers in their area, citing that consumers who had Anthem or purchased their plan outside of the Marketplace had no trouble finding in-network providers in Columbia. She is hoping that since Anthem dropped out of the Marketplace and she now has coverage through Cigna, it will be easier to find an in-network provider.
“This is one of the worst issues I’ve had since moving up here… I ended up paying $90 for a preventative service that would normally be free for the convenience of staying in town.”
