Layla, a 25-year-old from Laclede County, works at Wal-Mart while attending college. She also has a child. Although her child receives Medicaid, Layla makes too much to qualify for Medicaid herself and not enough to get a discount on the Marketplace. She has a cyst on the back of her knee that swells up and makes it difficult for her to stay on her feet all day at work. However, she cannot afford to go to the doctor without insurance. Layla would benefit immensely from Medicaid expansion because it would allow her to get the care she needs in order to be the best mother possible. Without access to health care, her condition will likely continue to make working difficult.
