Gerald, Jackson County

Gerald is a 61-year-old, self-employed man from Jackson County. Despite a shoulder surgery and knee replacement, he refused to get disability payments and continued working to support his family. However, he could not afford to buy insurance on his minimal salary and, therefore, could not tend to his continuing knee problems. He feared that unexpected medical bills could jeopardize his family’s finances and force his family to sleep on the streets. Thanks to the ACA, for the first time in thirteen years, he was able to find an affordable insurance plan. Because of the tax subsidies, he found a plan for him and his wife for only $40 per month. Now that Gerald has health insurance, he is relieved and he said,

“If something terrible happens to me and I have large medical bills, at least I will have a safety net.”
