Christopher is a 36-year-old husband and father of two. He works part-time at Schnucks, and his wife works at a before- and after-school program. Christopher shopped on the Health Insurance Marketplace, but his income is too low to receive Marketplace discounts, and he earns too much to qualify for Medicaid. Christopher says,
“My concern is that my father passed away around the age of 40 from a hereditary heart condition…I am now 36 and worried that I could possibly have this condition.”
Without insurance, a heart check-up would cost at least $1,000 out-of-pocket, which does not include the cost of any follow-up tests or medications. He has three young children and is using most of his income to pay for rent, utilities, and food. He does not have money to pay for expensive medical care, even if it means his health and life are on the line.
