Despite Autumn’s long history in the health industry, she now finds herself without health insurance. When Autumn lost her job in July 2013, she became uninsured for the first time. Autumn thought she might be able to find affordable coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace. But, she discovered that because Missouri didn’t pass Medicaid expansion, she wasn’t eligible for either tax credits or Medicaid. Without health insurance, Autumn is concerned she’ll have to use the emergency room for health concerns that could have been addressed with minimal cost. This includes a number of health conditions that run in her family, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Having worked in the health industry for so long, she understands the importance of addressing these problems early. But, she is afraid that without health insurance she won’t be able to do that.
