Alexis is working part-time while she studies for her master’s degree. She has always had health insurance but lost it when she moved to part-time work. And she can’t get on her school’s plan as a part-time student. When she tried to apply for insurance in 2013, she was denied due to a pre-existing condition. As a result, she went without care and medications she should have been receiving.
When the Health Insurance Marketplace opened, Alexis couldn’t wait to enroll in a new plan, since the law now prohibits insurers from denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions. As a result, Alexis was able to enroll in a Silver plan for just $45 a month after discounts. She reflects, “thanks to my marketplace plan, I’m now able to stay healthy while I finish my degree.”
