Speaking Tips about the Health Insurance Marketplace

The Goal of these programs is to give people information and hope that will lead them to go shop the Marketplace.

–You don’t have to be an expert on everything

–You don’t have to answer everyone’s personal questions

To be most successful:

–Be honest.

–Define terms. Deductible, co-pay, etc.

–Use plain language – “medicine” instead of “medication”

–Don’t get political

–Illustrate with stories, use the stories you know of those in your life

–Speak from your heart about why this matters to you.

Handling Questions

–It’s up to you whether to allow questions during the presentation or wait until the end.

–If you are confident you know the answer, share it.

–If you’re not sure, ask the person to write it down and offer to follow up (and make sure you do)

–If people have personal questions, suggest they talk to a Navigator or Certified Application Counselor.

–It’s okay to say “I don’t know.”
